colhoun launched on 21 february 1918 fore river shipyard , sponsored helen a. colhoun, daughter of edmund ross colhoun. commissioned on 13 june 1918 under command of commander b. b. wygant. reporting united states atlantic fleet, assigned convoy escort between new york city , ports in europe, escorting ships carrying troops , supplies supporting world war 30 june , 14 september 1918. on 18 november 1918, reported new london, connecticut assist in tests of sound equipment under development @ time. on 1 january 1919, rushed assist troop transport northern pacific had run aground off fire island, new york. colhoun assisted in transporting 194 of troops off of ship, had been returning europe, destination port in hoboken, new jersey.
on 1 december 1919, placed in reduced commission @ philadelphia navy yard, , underwent overhaul @ norfolk navy yard. between 1919 , 1922, colhoun remained assigned atlantic fleet on reserve status, based out of charleston, south carolina. took part in sporadic fleet exercises , large maneuvers, taking several midshipman cruises through caribbean , along east coast. in mid-1922, returned philadelphia naval yard , decommissioned on 28 june.
colhoun towed norfolk navy yard on 5 june 1940, , began conversion high-speed transport. recommissioned fleet on 11 december 1940, , received hull classification symbol of apd-2. following this, underwent year of training exercises between norfolk , caribbean, during attack on pearl harbor, , entry of u.s. world war ii.

on morning of 30 august 1942, colhoun ported @ kukum point , unloaded stores u.s. marine corps garrison on guadalcanal, , exited harbor undertake anti-submarine patrols. before 12:00, air raid siren issued , colhoun moved out sea. second alert received @ 14:00. shortly thereafter, lookout spotted formation of japanese aircraft approaching using sun cover. japanese aircraft, using clouds cover, dove , released 3 bombs against colhoun, 2 splashing nearby , 1 striking after searchlight platform , nearby boat. bomb blew after davits down , forward, blocking after engine room hatches, , starting fire diesel oil spilled boat.
colhoun attempted return fire anti-aircraft batteries, japanese aircraft remained obscured clouds. second dive launched 5 or 6 bombs on starboard side, knocking down foremast , blowing 2 20 millimetres (0.79 in) , 1 4 inches (100 mm) gun off ship. lubrication oil cooler pump in after engine room blown through bulkhead forward engine room. 2 bombs scored direct hits on after deck house, killing of men there. order given abandon ship, , several tank lighters arrived guadalcanal assist in taking in survivors. colhoun sank @ 09°24′s 160°01′e / 9.400°s 160.017°e / -9.400; 160.017. fifty-one men killed , 18 wounded in sinking. stricken naval vessel register on 11 september 1942. received 1 battle star service in world war ii.
