soweto came world s attention on 16 june 1976 soweto uprising, when mass protests erupted on government s policy enforce education in afrikaans rather native language. police opened fire in orlando west on 10,000 students marching naledi high school orlando stadium. rioting continued , 23 people died on first day in soweto, 21 of whom black, including minor hector pieterson, 2 white people, including dr melville edelstein, lifelong humanitarian.


the impact of soweto protests reverberated through country , across world. in aftermath, economic , cultural sanctions introduced abroad. political activists left country train guerrilla resistance. soweto , other townships became stage violent state repression. since 1991 date , schoolchildren have been commemorated international day of african child.
