west ham confirmed signing of nolan on 16 june 2011 undisclosed fee on five-year contract, taking on vacant number 4 shirt. due departure of previous west ham captain, matthew upson, moved stoke city, nolan made captain. league debut came on 7 august 2011 in 1–0 home defeat cardiff city. nolan scored first goal west ham on 13 august 2011 in 1–0 away win against doncaster rovers; first home goal coming on 26 november, when scored 25-yard volley in 3–1 win against derby county. on 7 may 2012 en route play-off final @ wembley, nolan scored thirteenth goal club against cardiff city in 3–0 win, sealing west ham s wembley appearance. on 19 may 2012 captained west ham in 2012 championship play-off final against blackpool. west ham won match 2–1 goals carlton cole , ricardo vaz tê sending them premier league after one-season absence.


nolan continued form 2012–13 season , scored first goal of season on opening day, scoring goal of game in 1–0 win against aston villa. on 1 september, scored inside 1 minute during 3–0 win @ home fulham. scored third goal of season on 22 september, rescuing point west ham scoring in added time in 1–1 draw @ home sunderland. on 20 april 2013 nolan scored 100th career goal, netting second goal in 2–0 home victory against wigan athletic. nolan wrapped 2012–13 season scoring second premier league hat-trick in 4–2 win against reading on 19 may 2013. hat-trick meant nolan had scored 10 league goals in season fourth season in succession.


nolan started 2013–14 campaign scoring in first game of season again, in 2–0 home win against cardiff city. west ham struggled in first half of season , nolan s influence on games described low key . in december 2013 sent-off @ anfield in defeat liverpool foul on jordan henderson. after serving 3 match ban dismissed again, in second match back, foul on fulham s fernando amorebieta in 2–1 defeat @ craven cottage. fined 2 weeks wages, £100,000, west ham manager sam allardyce considering removing captaincy of club nolan. nolan finished top scorer west ham in 2013–14 season.


at start of 2014–15 season played in first game, 1–0 home defeat tottenham hotspur before second game fractured shoulder in training, injury expected keep him out of football @ least 6 weeks. nolan played 29 games west ham in 2014–15 season, 10 after coming on substitute. having been top scorer in previous 2 seasons, scored single goal, in 2–1 away win against west bromwich albion in december 2014. nolan received criticism of performances during season, notably west ham supporters , jack sullivan, son of west ham s co-chairman, david sullivan.


his last game club came on 22 august 2015 against bournemouth. starting game, nolan substituted matt jarvis @ half-time side 2–0 behind in eventual 4–3 home loss. 5 days later, nolan left west ham united mutual consent after 4 years @ club. had played 157 games west ham in competitions, scoring 31 goals.
