esben , witch formed in 2008 when daniel copeman moved southampton brighton , met thomas fisher , began making music, decided wanted vocalist , held auditions unsuccessful. thomas fisher bumped old friend rachel davies, had graduated brighton university, , asked if join group , accepted. in 2009 band recorded first ep, 33, , released same year, ep gathered attention around band , in 2010 contributed song skeleton swoon on volume 3 of dance radio label s 4 x 12 . shortly after released first official single lucia, @ precipice in february on limited edition seven-inch vinyl on pure singles club, accompanying video released.


in 2010, band signed matador records , began work on debut album, violet cries, in march 2010. released second single marching song in october, single went @ number 50 in billboard hot singles sales. on 31 january released violet cries shortly after band s shortlisting in bbc’s sound of 2011 poll. album critically acclaimed , went @ number 13 in uk indie chart, allmusic awarded 3 , half stars out of five, calling promising , captivating debut . nme said gothic not goth giving 8/10. after release of album went on release 2 more singles off album, warpath , chorea . in november 2011 released hexagons ep digital download.


wash sins not face (2012-2013)

in 2012 band began work on writing new material album, unlike debut album, violet cries (2011), lyrics written solely davies. writing album done while isolated in cottage in east sussex. songs first recorded live in studio, davies said wanted album have warmer sound. co-produced album tom morris, saying great have else in process, actually, – again – hadn’t done .


in october announced wash sins not face along promotional single deathwaltz . felt bridge between first album second, later in december 2012 accompanying video released directed sim warren. released on 21 january 2013 on cd, digital download , deluxe lp version of album released, features lp , cd version of album , bonus 7 . lyrics seems semi-concept album meant journey , each song represents part of journey. lot of lyrics inspired books , poems such despair vladimir nabokov , road not taken robert frost. album critically acclaimed, nme said call highbrow, call highfalutin, wash sins…, esben carving hulking tablets of stone boasting intellect nothing scared of. no amount of splashing can scrub out giving 7/10, , clash said ...everything album bigger has gone before , reveals energised band real belief in they’re doing. quite right . in july, performed live score film la antena @ east end film festival. wash sins... proved band s final album matador, announcing departure alongside pledgemusic campaign in february 2014.

11th century parish church of St Leonard Hythe, Kent
