History Hazaribagh







a small effective bengali community settled @ hazaribagh in 19th century when area in bengal presidency , british administration looking people english education. small community contributed considerably towards development of place.


rai bahadur jadunath mukhopadhyaya (mukherjee), 1 of settlers, first government pleader of hazaribagh. house in hazaribagh town played host many eminent persons including sanjiv chattopadhaya (of palamau fame), rabindranath tagore , subhas chandra bose. established hazaribagh brahmo samaj, donating own land through trust set up. helped set durga puja mandap, keshav hall/union club , library , first girls school in town, donating own land , admitting daughter first student; school named after him. chanchala niyogi made significant contribution keep school going around 1895. days when people thought educating daughters paving way widowhood. around 1920, new school building built initiative of braja kumar niyogi funds estate of raja of ramgarh. ray bahadur jadunath mukherjee left behind large family. scholars such mahesh chandra ghosh , dhirendranath choudhury made town home. poet kamini roy lived in town years. manmathanath dasgupta, brahmo missionary spent many years in hazaribagh working amongst downtrodden. sarat kumar gupta contributed towards development of town in many ways. doctors such mandindra bhushan banerjee (panna babu), bikash kumar sen, sambhu nath roy , benoy chandra chatterjee prominent personalities. noted bengali author , writer many hindi films sujata, subodh ghosh, born , brought in hazaribagh. many of stories set in region.


keshub chunder sen, great brahmo leader, accompanied trailokyanath sanyal, visited hazaribagh in 1874 recoup health. wrote many pieces during short stay , participated in bhadrotsav celebrations. after death in 1884, public hall on main road named keshub hall in memory. amongst brahmo missionaries visited hazaribagh regularly pramathalal sen.


rai bahadur kalipada sarkar leading advocate. chairman of municipality, chairman of district board, president of bar association , member of council. first indian chairman of hazaribagh municipality.


another notable bengali of first half of 20th century rai bahadur surendra nath roy, noted government pleader , patron of arts. suren babu migrated village raghunathpur (nadia, bengal), zamindar (জমিদার) , title rai bahadur conferred on him british in 1902 practice law in civil court @ hazaribagh. time president of bar association, , co-founder of annada high school (bengali school). acted custodian of minor kamakhya narayan singh, erstwhile raja of ramgarh raj.
