according 2007 constitution, cabinet instructed president of national assembly invite crown prince vajiralongkorn throne. became first monarch born in native thailand since prajadhipok. after father, bhumibol adulyadej, died on 13 october 2016, vajiralongkorn expected succeed throne of thailand asked time mourn before taking throne. on night of 1 december 2016, fiftieth day after death of bhumibol, regent prem tinsulanonda led heads of country s 3 branches of government audience vajiralongkorn invite him ascend throne tenth king of chakri dynasty. vajiralongkorn accepted invitation, saying in televised statement: accept in order fulfil majesty s wishes , benefit of thais. government retroactively declared reign have begun upon father s death, not crown him formally until after cremation of father. maintained residence @ amphorn sathan residential hall, living before father s death.


the appointment of members of privy council

following resignation of councillors bhumibol adulyadej, vajjiralongkorn appointed 10 members of privy council. command issued under section 2 of 2014 interim constitution, completed sections 12, 13 , 16 of 2007 constitution on king retained , remain in effect. remaining 7 members surayud chulanont, kasem wattanachai, palakorn suwanrath, atthaniti disatha-amnarj, supachai poo-ngam, chanchai likhitjitta , chalit pukbhasuk, 3 new members, paiboon koomchaya, dapong ratanasuwan, , teerachai nakwanich. prem tinsulanonda re-appointed privy council president royal command. on 13 december 2016, king appointed 2 new members, wirach chinvinitkul , charunthada karnasuta. on 25 december 2016, king appointed 1 more new member, kampanart rooddit. on 19 january 2017, privy councillor chanchai likhitjitta died @ age of 71. new appointments , death of member brought total numbers of privy council 13.

thailand s military-backed parliament voted overwhelmingly in january 2017 make amendments interim constitution allow amendments draft constitution suggested new king s office, move delay general election scheduled end of year. critics said new constitution give military powerful political years or decades. 2017 constitution of thailand approved in referendum in 2016, , endorsed king maha vajiralongkorn on 6 april 2017, chakri day, in ceremony @ ananta samakhom throne hall. prime minister prayut chan-o-cha said office of king vajiralongkorn had asked several changes clauses related royal power in draft constitution, rare intervention sitting thai monarch. after death of king bhumibol, political activity paused during period of mourning expected end @ end of 2017, followed coronation of vajiralongkorn , general election.
