in 1914, competition held new pittsburgh city hall. 16-entry competition led commissioning of edward b. lee, respected pittsburgh architect, palmer, hornbostel, & jones associated architects. completed design done hornbostel. building commissioned former pittsburgh mayor joseph g. armstrong celebrate 100th anniversary of pittsburgh s 1816 incorporation city.
the grand lobby naturally lit atrium 47-foot high barrel-vaulted ceiling. ceiling held bronze columns crafted louis tiffany studios. feature @ bases, seals of pittsburgh , allegheny county, frontiersman guyasuta, , pittsburgh s oldest surviving building, fort pitt blockhouse. rooms ornate elevator doors feature series of reliefs detailing previous homes of municipal government. reliefs age building s clutch, reaching adulthood present city-county building , allegheny county courthouse.
the building unique in of furniture designed building s architect, hornbostel. office of mayor, council chamber, , supreme court room feature 1917 furniture still in use today.
on seventh floor of building massive mural completed in 1940 entitled justice award winning artist harry scheuch.
