maginnis born in 1841 on family s farm near pultneyville, wayne county, new york, patrick , winnifred devine maginnis. parents came ireland, father county clare , mother galway, , met , married in liverpool, england. after mixed success in business, patrick , winifred maginnis immigrated united states in 1838 , settled in wayne county, new york. patrick worked contractor on new york central railway. in 1851, maginnis family moved west lasalle, illinois patrick worked on illinois central railroad. family next moved goodhue township near red wing, minnesota in 1853. young maginnis pursued education in public schools , in minnesota attended hamline university, left take charge of democratic newspaper. maginnis had come know william wallace phelps, lawyer , part owner of red wing sentinel newspaper, , william j. colvill, first editor of sentinel. colvill took young maginnis under wing, liberally sharing library him , enjoying abundant hunting , fishing in area. 1861 maginnis owned red wing sentinel, while phelps edited.
