newton took first astrophotograph when 13 years old of planet saturn. invented cold camera astrophotography, allowing substantially longer exposures on film.


in 1991 newton became first amateur astrophotographer make full (rgb) color ccd images of celestial objects using santa barbara instruments group st-4 camera, making full color ccd image of m57, ring nebula , m27, dumbbell nebula . took 3 separate black , white images, each taken separate filter in red, blue, , green, later combined in software being developed amateur astrophotography richard berry, editor of astronomy magazine. berry published first combined color ccd image of m27 magazine s cover.
