collar city bridge traveling west (south on i-787)
construction began in 1960s on first segment of i-787 i-87 bassett street. completed , opened traffic in mid-1960s. 1968, construction had begun on remainder of i-787 south of watervliet. portion of highway between i-90 , ny 378 completed 1971; rest of i-787 south of 23rd street in watervliet built , open traffic 1973. ramps south mall arterial opened in 1974. extension of freeway north arch street near green island completed 1977. 1980, majority of modern exit 9 completed though collar city bridge , alternate route 7 freeway had yet constructed. collar city bridge on hudson river built in 1981, connecting pre-existing ramps @ exit 9 downtown troy.
when i-787 first planned, northern terminus @ us 4 in troy. on january 1, 1970, i-787 designation truncated westward exit 9 near green island while then-proposed collar city bridge became (albeit on paper) part of i-88, new highway extending binghamton troy way of susquehanna expressway , alternate route 7. extension of i-88 never materialized alternate route 7 ended becoming realignment of ny 7 when completed in 1980s.
northbound ramp slipped off supports, supported temporary tower
in 2005, elevated section of northbound exit 3 off ramp slipped off supports, causing temporary closure of ramp , causing disruption of flow of traffic empire state plaza. ramp connects i-787 south mall arterial. initially, roads , ramps near or under elevated highway closed, once temporary piers in place, roads reopened. detour set allow northbound traffic enter plaza, required crossing hudson river on dunn memorial bridge , traveling through city of rensselaer on bridge, allowing access plaza. slip caused south end of simple span of overpass drop 2 feet (0.6 m). pier stands 80 feet (24.4 m) tall @ slippage point. nobody injured slipped ramp.
