the former birmingham central library, opened in 1972, considered largest municipal library in europe. 6 of collections designated arts council england being pre-eminent collections of national , international importance , out of 8 collections recognised in local authority libraries nationwide. new library of birmingham in centenary square, replacing central library, opened on 3 september 2013. designed dutch architects mecanoo , has been described kind of public forum ... memorial, shrine, book , literature . library faces cuts, due reduced funding central government. there 41 local libraries in birmingham, plus regular mobile library service. library service has 4 million visitors annually. due budget cuts, 4 of branch libraries risk closure whilst services may reduced elsewhere.
