karekin khajag born karekin chakalian on 6 october 1867 in alexandropol within russian empire (present-day gyumri, armenia). called chakal oghli (turkish: son of chakal), later rendered khajag around him. in 1883, after attaining education locally, continued higher education @ gevorgian seminary. graduating in 1886, khajag became teacher , 7 years taught in parochial schools in baku, akulis, , ganja. during time in baku, khajag joined armenian revolutionary federation (arf). further education, khajag went geneva, attended university of geneva , studied social sciences. while in geneva, began contribute newspaper droshak, organ of arf.
immediately after graduation in 1898, khajag sent balkans , alexandria editorial staff of droshak. after staying in alexandria year, went izmir 6 months , constantinople, remained 2 years.

karekin khajag imprisoned 8 months due revolutionary activity. exiled caucasus continued work teacher. became principal of armenian school in shushi 2 years. after marriage, khajag settled in tiflis in 1903 , became 1 of editors of armenian newspaper mshak. while working newspaper, taught on side @ nersisyan school. in 1906, became 1 of founding editors of newspaper harach, working alongside avetis aharonian , yeghisheh topjian.
in 1908 arrested , sent prison, remained 6 months. after being released, khajag arrested again , sent prison 9 months later.
after being released prison in 1912, khajag returned constantinople contributed local newspaper azadamard, while becoming principal of armenian school in district of samatya.
