political career
mae sexton first became active in elected politics in 1991, when stood independent candidate longford town council , longford county council , elected both bodies, receiving largest number of votes in each case. stood @ 1992 general election in longford–roscommon independent candidate, obtained 1,160 first preference votes (2.6%), , eliminated, failing elected.
prior 1997 general election, joined progressive democrats, , stood in longford–roscommon constituency party, obtaining 2,289 first preference votes (4.8%), , being eliminated on second count.
she re-elected both longford urban district , county councils in 1999 local elections, although first preference vote both bodies had declined.
she stood again @ 2002 general election. first preference vote increased 4,679 (9.4%), , elected dáil Éireann, finishing 54 votes ahead of fianna fáil candidate final seat, having edged out sitting fine gael td, louis belton, on 200 votes @ earlier stage in count. election in 2002, in predominantly rural midland constituency party associated urban middle classes 1 of major surprises of election, , came after series of near misses elimination during progress of election count.

with dissolution of progressive democrats in 2009, sexton stood independent candidate @ 2009 local elections in longford. regained seats on both longford county , town councils.
labour party (2010–12)
in april 2010, labour party announced sexton had accepted invitation join party. sexton ran in 2011 general election in longford–westmeath alongside sitting labour td willie penrose. unsuccessful garnering 3,960 votes or 6.8% of poll. left labour party in december 2012, citing concerns on budget.
2016 general election
she unsuccessful independent candidate @ 2016 general election longford–westmeath_ constituency.
