april 13 – james cook arrives in tahiti, on ship hm bark endeavour, preparing 1769 transit of venus observed tahiti on june 3. after voyage, data found inaccurate in determining distance between sun , earth.
april 29 – james watt granted british patent method of lessening consumption of steam in steam engines – separate condenser, key improvement (first devised watt in 1765) stimulates industrial revolution.

august 3 – party of gaspar de portolà becomes first white group set foot in area known santa monica, california.
august 18 – brescia explosion: city of brescia, italy devastated when church of san nazaro struck lightning. resulting fire ignites 200,000 lb (90,000 kg) of gunpowder being stored there, causing massive explosion, destroys 1/6 of city , kills 3,000 people. disaster prompts roman catholic church abandon religious objection using lightning rods protect property.
september – massive droughts in bengal lead bengal famine of 1770, in ten million people, third of population, die, worst natural disaster in human history (in terms of lives lost). maharajah of mysore forces british agree treaty of mutual assistance in view of famine, british east india company increases demands on bengali people keep profits up.
september 6–9 – david garrick holds shakespeare jubilee festival @ stratford-upon-avon in england.
