born in bilbao, basque country, mendieta made professional debut @ 17 cd castellón in segunda división, featuring full-back.

on 3 november 2009, mendieta quoted saying part of him interested in football management when interviewed bbc. said: part of me can see excitement , challenge of being manager, definitely. after retiring, settled family near middlesbrough, in yarm.
