the low mountains of western cuba disrupted hurricane gustav s low-level circulation. although crosses island in few hours, brief interaction caused storm s eye partially cloud-over , wind speeds fell 140 mph (230 km/h) entered southeastern gulf of mexico night. through night , morning of august 31 continued moving northwestward across gulf, winds weakening 125 mph (201 km/h) damage interaction cuba continued take toll. morning eye, expanding storm weakened, clouded over. mid- upper-level dry air drawn cyclone , trough south added slight vertical shear, these interferences short lived. under continued influence of ridge on western atlantic , southeastern united states hurricane gustav accelerated central gulf. here storm tracked on warm eddy in loop current, high oceanic heat content failed induce strengthening. deep convection continued asymmetric , eyewall opened southeast wind speed continued fall category 2 status. afternoon of august 31 hurricane s ragged appearance began improve. eye returned , minimum central pressure fell outer bands came ashore on northern gulf coast. asymmetric appearance improved , wind radius expanded, night gustav had moved off eddy of loop current , on cooler water. not restrengthen here, despite more impressive presentation.


in pre-dawn hours of september 1, while 170 mi (270 km) gulf coast, hurricane s wind field expanded , tropical storm force winds extended 220 mi (350 km) center. dry air intrusion south broke hurricane s eye, dissolving eyewall heavy rain bands came ashore in state of louisiana. eye approached louisiana coast, storm weakened 105 mph. making landfall near cocodrie, louisiana @ 1430 utc eye briefly reformed not associated strengthening.
