on august 31, several days prior earl s passage, rough seas produced storm killed man in massachusetts after knocked off rocks , pulled out sea. late on september 3, weakened tropical storm earl brushed new england, center passing 90 mi (140 km) south-southeast of nantucket, massachusetts. during height of storm, heavy rains , winds 58 mph (93 km/h) buffeted coastline. in yarmouth, total of 5.17 in (131 mm) of rain fell during storm, highest in state. throughout state, 1,800 residences, 600 of on cape cod, lost power due downed trees , power lines. in local harbors, boats unaffected storm; however, 1 did capsize. significant losses businesses lost labor day weekend revenue. several hotels estimated 10% of revenue lost, equates hundreds of thousands of dollars. 1 hotel in yarmouth reported 80% decrease in attendance despite price cut $130 $85. on other hand, supply stores saw improved sales, experiencing 20% increase in revenues. due lack of major damage storm, businesses reopened on september 4 , tourists resumed weekend plans. throughout state, earl left $20,000 in damage.


in parts of rhode island, coastal flooding inundated low-lying roads, leaving ocean debris behind. further north in maine, effects of earl limited increased swells along coast , moderate rainfall. several areas across state measured on 2 in (51 mm) of rain, highest total being measured @ 4.28 in (109 mm) in machias. winds in state peaked between 35 , 40 mph (55 , 65 km/h), though no wind damage took place. prior earl s arrival, dry spell left several brooks , streams empty; however, rainfall storm alleviated drought conditions. 1 road experienced flooding result of rains. according state transportation officials, northbound , southbound traffic along maine turnpike down 19% , 2.7% respectively, indicating many tourists expected travel region changed plans.
