although both british , american pop art began during 1950s, marcel duchamp , others in europe francis picabia , man ray predate movement; in addition there earlier american proto-pop origins utilized found cultural objects. during 1920s, american artists gerald murphy, charles demuth , stuart davis created paintings contained pop culture imagery (mundane objects culled american commercial products , advertising design), prefiguring pop art movement.
