by end of second world war, station destroyed allied bombings. Öbb architect later combined various designs of other well-known architects create plain, functional replacement station building in style of 1950s. in 1954, austrian artist max weiler awarded contract design of large departure hall. design, however, has attracted controversy, chose pair of murals on display represent innsbruck s heritage.
in 1997, Öbb launched bahnhofsoffensive, scheme reconstruct existing railway stations within austria. innsbruck hauptbhanhof received new design architects of riegler riewe. groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2001 , new station officially open on 19 may 2004. Öbb renovated 1920s clock tower in north wing housing police station. total cost of construction project amounted €25 million.
