the catholic church in slovenia part of worldwide catholic church, under spiritual leadership of pope in rome.


there around 1,195,000 catholics in country (about 57.8% of total population per 2002 census). country divided 6 dioceses, including 2 archdioceses. diocese of maribor elevated archdiocese pope benedict xvi in 2006. additionally, pope created 3 new sees, namely novo mesto, celje , murska sobota.

protestantism

protestantism has long history in slovenia, reformation being strong in 16th century. lutheranism became popular protestant denomination in slovenia, minor conversions calvinism. today, protestants live in prekmurje region. protestantism survived counter-reformation implemented habsburgs. counter-reformation swept through of slovenia, excluding easternmost regions (including prekmurje) ruled hungarian nobles, happened calvinist. did not seek extinguish lutheranism, became preferred confession among slovenes. historically speaking, hungarians took lutheranism first, before leaving in favor of more radical theology of calvinism. primoz trubar leading lutheran reformer in slovenia, contributing development of slovene language , slovenian culture.
