nanyo academy (南陽學院, nanyō gakuen) school named after nanyang, based on wu kingdom in 3 kingdoms period. top-ranked fighters in nanyo known big 4 (南陽四天王, nanyō shiten ō), consists of shimei ryomou, gakushuu, kouha kannei, , genpou saji. after kannei s defeat, koukin shuuyu becomes 1 of big 4 in place.

hakufu sonsaku (孫策 伯符, sonsaku hakufu)

ryomou third-year student @ nanyo academy. odd girl short blue hair , green eyes, distinctive beauty mark on left cheek, , strange history, tied mysterious left-eye patch, , seen wearing fingerless gloves , combat boots. powerful , b-rank, 1 of nanyo s big four. has habit of wearing blue miniskirted french maid outfit, , specializes in submission wrestling moves, throws, , joint attacks uses in conjunction pair of handcuffs carries, , proficient in making chi blasts. earlier life before became fighter unknown, hinted being tragic , painful. she, teifu, , saji have been best friends long before start of series, , ryomou in love saji , cares teifu (who loves her). ryomou has fought fun of it, , considers herself no 1 s woman. presumably because of dragon, has minor split personality; 1 shy , normal , other psychosexual. psycho side not bad ryubi, sousou , hakufu.


three years prior start of series, ryomou fought ryuubi when dragon had awakened, , saved life right before ryuubi attempted rip own heart out. in process, ryuubi s dragon possessed ryomou s left eye, , coexists her. power healed after being mortally wounded , stabbed through heart teni. no other characters seem in harmony dragons as ryomou, still seals eye-patch , believed dying because of it. few aware of this, , not stated whether shares ryuubi s dragon or has own. while has it, powerful other 3 rulers. magical eye may reference chinese idiom @ person new eye, or reevaluate them or not judge them appearance, idiom attributed lu meng brilliant scholar warrior.

koukin shuyu (周瑜 公瑾, shūyu kōkin)

hakufu s rich cousin , second-year student @ nanyo academy. attractive pretty boy, both kanu (tokyopop translation only) , ukitsu have expressed exclusive interest in him (this trait toned down in anime). although c-ranked fighter, lack of confidence , short resume of victories (or battles matter) keep him becoming a-ranked despite having power of one. has crush on cousin hakufu , shy , well-meaning, making life difficult him. oddly, hakufu not seem mind being naked around him, shows how connected him, @ times thinks pervert whenever caught in embarrassing situation (such hakufu catching him staring @ things). 1 of nanyo s big four, taking kannei s place after defeated.


koukin has demonstrated great power when defended hakufu , kakouton ugan gang, astonished kakouton. stayed behind fight , captured, allowing other 2 escape. while being held captive in kyosho, seduced 3 beautiful girls (one of them being seito s spy, shokan, reveals identity him afterwards) in attempt make koukin betray nanyo , fight sousou. is, in fact, part of plan battle of red cliffs; koukin enacting plan of bodily harm. once kyosho forces scattered in battle breaks free, defeating kaku , gakushin. trying locate separated nanyo , seito forces in order take command, per fate in battle.

a third-year student @ nanyo academy blond hair , light tan, , 1 of nanyo s big four. 1 of ryomou s oldest friends (whom refers mou-chan ), , has feelings both , housen ryofu; so, complete womanizer. actual ranking fighter unknown, never wears magatama in public, in fights has shown himself a-rank easily. 1 of primary goals ouin remove totaku power, which, historical namesake, accomplishes convincing ryofu assassinate him.


in order further hakufu s mastery of water dragon fist, saji donned magatama , identity of ouin, granting him great power , altering appearance. engaging hakufu in deadly combat, intentionally awakens dragon, then, using experience ryuubi s dragon 3 years ago, absorbs dragon s negative energy himself, snapping hakufu normal , placing dragon s power under control, though @ cost of losing 1 of arms in process. infected dragon s evil , knowing not have time left, declares no longer saji ouin, , has lived longer should have. telling hakufu not cry him, commits suicide jumping off nearby cliff in manner eerily similar totaku s death, last thoughts of ryofu. @ same time, though far away, ryomou struck knowledge saji not coming back.

gakushu (樂就, gakushū)

called gaku-chan hakufu, third-year student @ nanyo academy, b-ranked fighter, , 1 of big four. large, muscular man scary face nice personality, man of honor core, , prides himself in , in rippling muscles, gets beaten weakest of opponents. learned how use chi blasts after ryomou blasted him through wall without twitching. despite strength , training, skill far poorer of ryomou , ryofu s, shown when blasted kakouen still got afterwards. though helping nanyo alliance seito, pessimistic chances, such when commented plan of bodily harm not work since kogai had been killed earlier. later assists along saji , rikuson test hakufu s worth leader of nanyo, , has no serious involvement since then.


gakushuu plays more important role in anime in manga, serving sort of de facto commander when enjutsu , saji go silent. investigates enjutsu s odd behavior, , first find out dead captured kannei. gets beaten more in manga, miraculously recover episode later. shown have sweet tooth, , holds meeting koukin in ice cream shop. in dragon destiny, becomes lot tougher , able have fight kakouen. @ end of series gets job in store, risks getting fired throwing customer through window when not stop harassing woman.


tokubou teifu (程普 德謀, teifu tokubō)

a long-time friend of saji , ryomou. once strong fighter , respected others. bullied enjutsu though enjutsu leader of nanyo @ time. has had feelings ryomou long knew each other. enjutsu got revenge when , kaku tricked teifu awakening ryuubi s dragon, , led teifu believe ryomou raped if teifu not obey him.


a few years later, teifu chosen 1 of nanyo s representatives grest fighters tournament, , suffered horrible beating in match left him in coma. have been killed if ryomou had not interfered in match, causing him disqualified. teifu recovered coma blind , near recovered. teifu still jokes blaming ryomou getting him disqualified. when ryomou left doubting abilities after losing hakufu, teifu offers needed encouragement. in anime, teifu keeps injuries , feelings ryomou. however, not appear @ in dragon destiny, ryomou discovered own dragon.


hakugen rikuson (陸遜 伯言, rikuson hakugen)

a cute, bespectacled junior @ nanyo academy skilled in making poisons. has joined nanyo gang intention of helping them beat sousou. according lu xun s history (both in manga , other sources), lu xun credited defeat of guan yu, not lu meng. manga states rikuson defeated kanu , ryuubi per ryomou s orders, history books variably give full credit either lu meng or lu xun coming plan led defeat of guan yu s forces (although in case both important victory). history states rikuson ryomou s protegé , eventual successor. rikuson refers ryomou big sister in english translation, although not confirmed if related. trying nanyo/seito alliance during sekiheki battle, panicked due forces being separated , not in communication.


in dragon destiny, although still student in nanyo, hakugen seen ukitsu , chokou in anime, revealed trained latter. person found hakufu unconscious in river after battle sousou. visits ukitsu s grave chokou @ end of series, , helps chokou train young fighters.


shokyo (小喬, shōkyō) / chuubo sonken (孫権 仲謀, sonken chūbō)

an anime-exclusive character appears in great guardians. introduced younger sister of hakufu under name of chuubo sonken, later tells them name in fact shokyo. quotes military strategist sun tzu. implied might have feelings koukin, destined wife. unlike sister hakufu, shokyo polite, shy, gentle, , skilled @ cooking. pointed out many characters in series shokyo not sister @ all. confesses feelings koukin, turns down gently , tells not let destiny rule life. accepts gracefully, deducing koukin s love hakufu. joins hakufu s fight real saji, whom bravely speaks , helps on problems , traumas.


kouro enjutsu (袁術 公路, enjutsu kōro)
the former leader of nanyo , once totaku s lapdog, complete weakling @ that. kakouen mutilated face when attacked nanyo looking gyokuji. played role in ryubi s first awakening of dragon 3 years before start of series. kaku offered enjutsu revenge on teifu pushing him around, , staged phony video of enjutsu s henchmen rape ryomou (kaku in disguise) , showed teifu, threatening go ahead rape if not obey enjutsu. when teifu fell trick, enjutsu sent him assault seito , attack ryubi, leading dragon awakening. presumed dead. in anime, killed kannei under ouin s orders prior series start, driving kannei insane, , withered corpse seen.


kouha kannei (甘寧 興霸, kannei kōha)

one of nanyo academy s big four. pervert , highly dishonorable fighter, specializes in using pair of tonfas hidden blades. myosai used pressure point move on him kill him in ten days, , promised remove effect if kannei kill hakufu has failed far. interrupts seito group s attack during battle, having been possessed ryofu s magatama. shows none of personality, has vicious fight. stopped taishiji.


in anime adaptation, crazier manga counterpart, , can best described deranged chimpanzee. ouin drives him insane making him kill enjutsu prior start of series. hypnotizes kannei believing enjutsu still alive, , gives him orders suicidally follows. confined asylum @ end of first season still remains. however, after bashoku s framing of kannei death of kakuka in dragon destiny, mysteriously vanished confinement, led koukin , gakushuu suspecting seito may have been involved.


shikei roshuku (魯肅 子敬, roshuku shikei)
a student nanyo wearing many bandages, injuries never explained. first appears among nanyo gang announce kanu has been captured sousou, , comes plan involving nanyo , seito team , launch surprise attack on koushou. not appear in anime adaptation, though makes brief cameo in last episode of dragon destiny ova.


shiyu shokatsukin (諸葛瑾 子瑜, shokatsukin shiyu)
a student @ nanyo appears in last chapters of volume 13, when hakugen calls hakufu wake unconsciousness. last seen in animal-carehouse.


shisonzui (士孫瑞)

the retainer of ou family. in anime, seen in flashback when ouin decided disguise himself genpou saji. ouin told him how managed escape fate (in novel, after dong zhuo s death, wang yun , shisun rui killed followers li jue , guo si).

moutoku sousou (曹操 孟德, sōsō mōtoku)

the eccentric leader of kyosho academy, best friend genjou , houkou, , b-ranked fighter. until dragon awoke, did not care state of affairs, afterward became extremely violent, blood-thirsty, , power-mad because due dragon s influence. however, more interested in controlling powerful fighters getting precious artifacts such gyokuji , hyakuhekito. when kanu refused freed in return ryubi surrendering gyokuji, sousou happily accepts kanu s request , orders gyokuji returned. sousou criticizes kaku wearing glasses, telling looks cuter without them. strongest character @ moment. has strange dreams involving old man writing on forehead asking sousou avenge him. despite shibai s plan keep him away battle of red cliffs no matter what, dragon pulls him forcibly towards battle, dragon desires combat ryubi , sonsaku.

genjou kakouton (夏侯惇 元讓, kakōton genjō)

kakouton seen trying regain memories in episode of great guardians, , meets ryofu on bus doing same. kakouton decides go ryofu , maybe himself. kakouton meets saji/ouin , tells him kakouen can him memories. ryofu passes out , kakouton tries stopped kakouen. hakufu shows stop kakouen s next attack , triggers of kakouton s memories of when first met. kakouton stands himself, throwing away backpack has repair kit in it. hakufu reminds kakouton how important kit him , remembers everything. kakouton defeats kakouen, telling find own way sousou.


houkou kakuka (郭嘉 奉孝, kakuka hōkō)

a third-year student @ kyosho academy , best friend sousou , kakouton. destined die of cancer, somehow managed cured. oddly flickered ghost around kaku, sweetheart. reasonably strong , highly manipulative (perhaps against sousou himself), put coma yojo bashoku, framed kannei of nanyo attack. in anime, did not suffer cancer , killed bashoku in ikki tousen: dragon destiny instead of being put coma. stabbed in heart rather in back, , dies wounds. stronger well, being able defeat ryomou in first season. bashoku had resort poisoning before being able kill him. later in story, revealed koumei of seito, knowing sousou want vengeance, arranged kakuka s murder in kannei s name several reasons: divert kyosho attacks away seito, weaken kyosho attempt attack both seito , nanyo, , make nanyo more receptive possibility of alliance seito when time right. day, few people know circumstances behind kakuka s death. koumei , bashoku kept role in kakuka s death secret, saji of nanyou guessed truth.


shikou soujin (曹仁 子孝, sōjin shikō)

a third-year student @ kyosho academy launched assault on seito. given 1 of hyakuhekitō use in battle, gang not past kanshou. tried distract kansho flashing shorts in front of him knocked out instead, own men attributing looked boyish plan have worked. personality-wise, soujin tomboy loses temper when insulted, when feminity concerned.

chuukou kyocho (許褚 仲康, kyocho chūkō)

a tall first-year student @ kyosho academy , 1 of sousou s loyal fighters; able block powerful chi blast sousou aimed towards shibai. although chuukou plays kyosho s volleyball team, part of school s stitching club , wanted judo club. chuukou , sousou used in judo club when younger, due staggering height age, picked on , assumed male other male club members. after called attempted molestation (being judo club members used force reveal whether or not male or female), sousou walked in , dragon manifested itself. slaughtered there in attempt protect friend. after regaining consciousness, chuukou embraced sousou , calmed rage. because of this, chuukou resolved protect him if cost life so. possesses largest bust size of female fighters, measuring 99cm in circumference.
