trelawny invented fictional story of activities teenager. story featured him deserting navy , traveling throughout asia. during time claimed have formed band of pirates fought against british navy. descriptions of adventures included duels , romance, such marrying arab girl name zella later poisoned jealous rival. these stories violent, friends found them exciting. trelawny used real events baseline stories, , embellished events took place. biographers have been divided whether intentionally exaggerated create persona or if came believe stories created.


trelawny enjoyed time in pisa. active during time there , practised boxing , fencing friends. attended theaters them @ night. enjoyed listening jane williams sing , play songs guitar shelley had given her.


in march trelawny involved in high-profile confrontation took place while travelling byron, shelley, , of friends. incident began when italian soldier confronted count john taafe, travelling shelley, trelawny, byron, , byron s entourage. although shelley wounded fell horse chasing after soldier, 1 of byron s servants later caught soldier , wounded him severely. incident controversial , received significant amount of publicity in pisa. in part due anti-english sentiment existed there @ time. after lengthy investigation italian authorities, trelawny , friends cleared of charges had been pending against them.


shelley , edward williams had wanted begin sailing time, , trelawny used naval experience them make plans. decided have american style schooner constructed; had observed type of boat during time in navy. after shelley , williams had constructed boat, don juan, trelawny hired byron captain of vessel, bolivar. trelawny moved room in byron s mansion @ time. trelawny s friend daniel roberts designed , supervised construction of both vessels. construction of bolivar cost £750, sum byron found irritatingly high.

after funeral, trelawny went on hunting trip daniel roberts. after returned, developed tension byron, in part due byron s habit of leaving bills unpaid. put trelawny in difficult position captain of boat. byron sold bolivar 400 guineas in late 1822. left trelawny unemployed. split time between genoa , albaro , hunted often. began spending of time mary shelley , supplied funds return england. trelawny fell in love claire clairmont. spurned proposals, however. decided move after mother found address , began sending him letters.
