the first face off of season, hurricanes @ wild in helsinki, finland.


a record 6 teams opened regular season in europe, in series branded 2010 compuware nhl premiere games. on october 7–8, 2010, carolina hurricanes , minnesota wild played 2 games @ hartwall areena in helsinki, finland. hurricanes swept wild. on october 8–9, 2010, columbus blue jackets , san jose sharks played 2 games @ ericsson globe in stockholm, sweden. 2 teams split two-game premiere. on october 9–10, 2010, boston bruins , phoenix coyotes played 2 games @ o2 arena in prague, czech republic. 2 teams split two-game premiere.

the regular season began in north america on october 7 4 additional games. in canada, cbc s hockey night in canada broadcast double header featuring 4 canadian teams. first game saw eastern canadian original six-era rivalry rekindled, toronto maple leafs hosting montreal canadiens. game followed battle of alberta when calgary flames visited edmonton oilers. in united states, both 2010 stanley cup finalists in action on versus. besides mentioned philadelphia flyers-pittsburgh penguins game open consol energy center, stanley cup champion chicago blackhawks played against colorado avalanche @ pepsi center in nightcap. blackhawks had home opener 2 nights later against central division rivals, detroit red wings, , hoisted first stanley cup championship banner in 49 years in pre-game ceremony.

2011 winter classic

the pittsburgh penguins hosted 2011 bridgestone nhl winter classic playing washington capitals @ heinz field on january 1, 2011. game telecast on nbc in usa , on cbc , rds in canada. washington capitals won game 3–1. game scheduled played @ 1 pm. however, inclement weather in pittsburgh forced nhl move game prime-time @ 8 pm.


the heritage classic returns

a second outdoor game, 2011 nhl heritage classic, held in canada @ mcmahon stadium in calgary, alberta, on february 20, 2011, between calgary flames , montreal canadiens. cbc, rds , versus telecasted game. second outdoor game held in canada following heritage classic in 2003 when montreal canadiens defeated edmonton oilers 4–3 @ commonwealth stadium in edmonton, alberta. heritage classic resulted in flames defeating canadiens 4–0. event recorded first shutout in nhl outdoor game.

cbc hosted 11th annual hockey day in canada event on february 12, 2011, in whitehorse, yukon. network broadcast triple header of games featuring 6 canadian teams. edmonton oilers hosted ottawa senators, toronto maple leafs visited montreal canadiens , vancouver canucks welcomed calgary flames.


usa

for first time ever, nhl , nbc hosted hockey day in america event on february 20, 2011, featuring 8 of popular american nhl teams. philadelphia flyers defeated new york rangers 4–2, washington capitals defeated buffalo sabres 2–1, red wings defeated minnesota wild 2–1, , highlight game of afternoon, meeting of last 2 stanley cup champions, penguins defeated blackhawks 3–2. event part of broader hockey weekend across america organized usa hockey.
