patterson spent 4 seasons @ university of north carolina @ greensboro, two-time southern conference player of year , national soccer coaches association of america all-american selection. finished college career 61 goals , 19 assists. patterson grew in teaneck, new jersey, raised mother after father killed in car accident when 2 years old, , attended bergen catholic high school in oradell, new jersey, whom led 1999 state championship. during college years played carolina dynamo of usl premier development league, scoring 15 goals in 14 games in 2006.

new york red bulls selected patterson first round pick in 2007 mls supplemental draft in january 2007. waived on february 18, 2008.
in march 2008, scored on debut charleston battery against toronto fc in carolina challenge cup in fall of 2008, joined chicago storm of xtreme soccer league, , played them during outdoor offseason, before re-joining charleston prior 2009 usl1 season.

patterson made debut soca warriors in march 2008 friendly match against el salvador.
