Extensions Shanghai maglev train



in january 2006, shanghai–hangzhou maglev line extension project proposed shanghai urban planning administrative bureau. extension continue existing line towards shanghai hongqiao international airport, running via shanghai south railway station , expo 2010 site, possible continuation towards hangzhou. extension allow transferring between 2 airports—located 55 km (34 mi) apart—in approximately 15 minutes.


the plan extension hangzhou first approved central government in february 2006, planned date of completion in 2010. work suspended in 2008, owing public protests on radiation fears despite environmental assessment shanghai academy of environmental sciences saying line safe , not affect air , water quality, , noise pollution controlled. according china daily, reported on people s daily online 27 february 2009, shanghai municipal government considering building maglev line underground allay public s fear of electromagnetic pollution , final decision on maglev line had approved national development , reform commission.


another approval granted in march 2010, construction begin in late 2010. new link 199.5 km (124 mi) long, 24 km (15 mi) longer original plan. top speed expected 450 km/h (280 mph) limited 200 km/h (124 mph) in built-up areas.


however, in october 2010 non-maglev shanghai–hangzhou high-speed railway opened, bringing travelling time between 2 cities down 45 minutes. plans maglev link have been suspended again.
