History Kruševo Republic

amongst various ethno-religious groups (millets) in kruševo republican council elected 60 members – 20 representatives each one: aromanians (vlachs); slav-, vlach- , albanian-speaking greek patriarchists , macedonian bulgarians (exarchists). council elected executive body – provisional government, 6 members (2 each mentioned group), duty promote law , order , manage supplies, finances, , medical care. kruševo manifesto published. written nikola kirov, outlined goals of uprising, calling upon muslim population join forces provisional government in struggle against ottoman tyranny, in order attain freedom , independence. both nikola kirov , nikola karev members of bulgarian workers social democratic party, perceived these leftist ideas.


however karev called members of local council brother bulgarians , while insurgents flew bulgarian flags, killed 5 greek patriarchists, accused ottoman spies, , subsequently assaulted local muslims (turks , albanians). long town controlled imaro komitadjis, patriarshist majority suspected , terrorized.


initially surprised uprising, ottoman government took extraordinary military measures suppress it. after fierce battles near mečkin kamen, ottomans managed destroy kruševo republic, committing atrocities against rebel forces , local population. today enormous monument on hill above kruševo marks elusive dream of ilinden revolutionaries. in area there monument called mečkin kamen. place pitu guli s band (cheta) tried defend town of kruševo ottoman troops coming bitola. whole band , leader (voivode) perished. result of gunnery, town set partially ablaze.
