in 1950s, assistant wally wood on stories several publishers, including fox, youthful, avon , ec comics, before becoming regular staff artist ec in summer of 1951. earning $25 page @ ec, , shortly after first ec stories under own name published summer, married first wife, gloria, in september 1951.


after ec, 1956 1959, drew classics illustrated adaptations, including ben-hur, tale of 2 cities , rudyard kipling s kim. in addition many contributions ec s mad (1960–69), orlando scripted little orphan annie comic strip beginning in 1964. did covers newsweek , new times, , work illustrator appeared in national lampoon, children s books , numerous comic books.

he worked in toy design, packaging , advertising; sales of harold von braunhut s sea monkeys escalated considerably after orlando drew series of unusual advertisements visualizing creatures enchanted , peaceful undersea kingdom. in 1992, short-lived live-action television show amazing live sea monkeys howie mandel used special effects make-up designs based on character concepts created orlando sea monkeys illustrations.

in late 1960s, orlando hired filipino artist tony dezuniga work on of dc s horror titles. in 1971, orlando , dc publisher carmine infantino traveled philippines on recruiting trip more artists. alfredo alcala, mar amongo, ernie chan, alex niƱo, nestor redondo, , gerry talaoc of filipino komik artists work dc, particularly in 1970s , 1980s.


during 1980s, orlando began teaching @ school of visual arts, continuing art instructor there many years.

after death of mad founder-publisher william gaines in 1992, publishing company/owner time warner positioned mad under purview of fellow-publishing-subsidiary dc comics. after shift, orlando became magazine s associate publisher. concurrently, involved in creating exclusive mad products then-new warner brothers studio store on fifth avenue.


although retired dc in 1996, nevertheless maintained office @ mad worked on mad cover concepts , other projects next 2 years. @ time of death in 1998, survived wife, karin, , 4 children.
