the walton road, wagon road connecting knoxville , nashville, forked @ crossville atop cumberland plateau. main branch (roughly following modern us-70n) continued northwestward monterey, while second branch (roughly following modern us-70) proceeded westward sparta. provide rest stop travellers along latter branch, rock house built on property of local farmer samuel denton sometime between 1835 , 1839. while sources unclear whether denton or fiske brothers, barlow , madison, built rock house, fiske brothers nevertheless in possession of structure 1839. there no definitive evidence barlow , madison fiske brothers. along providing nightly stopover, rock house used tollhouse until late 1850s, wagon roads during period contracted out local operators. construction of bon air hotel atop plateau few miles east in 1840s no doubt brought increased traffic rock house, although hotel destroyed during u.s. civil war.


in late-19th , early-20th centuries, rock house used variously residence , school, known rock house school. in 1941, daughters of american revolution obtained appropriations tennessee state government purchase , restore rock house, operated public museum , meeting place local chapter. local craftsman named clifton broyle completed numerous renovations @ rock house in 1960s.
