totten admired general scott, whom directed siege of veracruz chief engineer during mexican-american war. later served civil war union army general, being brevetted army brigadier general in 1847 , receiving permanent appointment in 1863.


one of totten s significant achievements design , construction of minot s ledge light near cohasset, massachusetts. previous efforts build lighthouse on small ledge of rock had failed totten conceived plan whereby lighthouse pinned own weight ledge making able withstand harshest extremes of weather. stands day flashing distinctive 1-4-3 light pattern has been interpreted mean love .


totten served of time chief engineer in rank of colonel promoted brigadier general on march 3, 1863. died of pneumonia in washington, d.c. on april 22, 1864 having served 60 years in army.


totten promoted brevet major general day before death , buried in congressional cemetery in washington, d.c..
