köhler began playing career in fc karl-marx-stadt team of late-1980s, reaching east german cup final in 1989 , finishing league runners-up following year. after german reunification, köhler remained club, called chemnitzer fc, , played 4 , half seasons in 2. bundesliga, before leaving join erzgebirge aue during 1995–96 season. after half year, köhler returned chemnitz, had been relegated regionalliga nordost, remained 5 years, third of ended in promotion second tier. left after 2016–17 season.
international career
köhler won 2 caps east germany, both coming in 1989. made debut substitute heiko scholz in 4–0 friendly win on egypt, , played in 1990 fifa world cup qualifier against ussr, match east germany lost 3–0.
coaching career
in 2001, köhler joined dynamo dresden serve assistant manager christoph franke, had coached him @ chemnitz. made 2 appearances club, remained assistant coach until franke dismissed in 2005, after earning 2 promotions lift club nofv-oberliga 2. bundesliga. after franke s departure, köhler served interim head coach , remained @ dynamo coach of under-19 team, before leaving manage hallescher fc in 2007. club won nofv-oberliga süd, , direct promotion regionalliga nord, in first season in charge. in 2011–12 season, köhler guided halle regionalliga nord title, , promotion 3. liga, after three-way promotion battle holstein kiel , rb leipzig. halle had conceded 15 goals in 34 league games, , achieved clean sheet in 24 of matches. sacked on 30 august 2015. appointed head coach of chemnitzer fc on 2 march 2016.
