arthur mathews had lifelong fascination priests, , developed character of father ted while working @ hot press graham linehan , paul woodfull in 1987–89. after considering several surnames, linehan suggested crilly, stuck. mathews has described version of ted generic priest, woodfull saw character more camp, , later said felt mathews had preempted camp/gay priest stereotype in irish comedy.


during production weekends, mathews , woodfull had idea joshua trio, comedic u2 tribute band. band performed various warm-up sketches written mathews, woodfull, , linehan, joined in non-musical capacity. led side-project, short-lived sketch troupe called fun bunch. decided base sketch around mathews s father ted character, group brainstormed surname in linehan s castleknock kitchen; linehan suggested crilly, stuck immediately. mathews debuted character on-stage @ comedy night in project arts centre. character received better woodfull s own working-class dublin priest, , mathews later appeared father ted in warm-up sketches joshua trio , woodfull s other musical act, tony st james , las vegas sound. ted, mathews read book, notes africa, purportedly written father dougal mcguire, missionary friend described experiences of being attacked , chased natives. in 1 sketch, ted discussed concern dougal, had been voted unpopular priest in africa 2 years running , spending christmas tree in grounds of bob geldof centre. during 1 tony st james olympia gig, audience members shouted not fucking priest! , pleased when ted produced portable confessional , proceeded talk it. on 1 occasion @ purty loft in dún laoghaire, sang don t have take our clothes off .


later, mathews , woodfull included character in starship róisín, short-lived science fiction comedy radio series wrote ian dempsey show on rtÉ radio. irish parody of star trek, followed adventures of captain bono (played woodful, based on singer bono), vulcan sidekick stephen spock roche (played mathews, based on cyclist stephen roche, cold, cycling brain ; storylines involved space bicycles ), ship chef darina alien (based on darina allen), emcee tony st james (woodfull), johnny guitar (a little fella made guitar sounds), , ship chaplain father ted (mathews). woodfull later said show bit weird [its] slot , , that, when station suggested take 2 of characters , launch spin-off called tea , toast tony , ted, mathews opted out.

in 1990, linehan , mathews began writing irish lives, six-part comedy television series. show have taken form of mockumentary, each episode focusing on interviewing different character; 1 of 6 characters father ted crilly. script, delivered in 1990, described ted perpetually jolly , rather sad man who, through terrible accident of faith, has found himself in priesthood. story involved ted returning seminary catch old friends, including father jack, whom fails realise has died. producer geoffrey perkins asked linehan , mathews discard mockumentary format , expand father ted episode traditional sitcom.


linehan found character of ted easier write if imagined mathews s version delivering lines. every time wrote ted in days, d hear arthur s voice... ted bland character d never curse except saying quiet feck himself. panic , turmoil under surface defined ted before started writing him. years later, when did, pressing play on tape recorder.
