as of mid-2009, party had on 49,000 members, making third largest party in sweden in terms of members. large increases in membership associated controversial legislative change regulating signals intelligence, ipred law regarding copyright holder access isp subscriber information , trial against pirate bay. on 17 april 2009 court reached guilty verdict in pirate bay trial , on same day , day after total of on 9,000 new members joined party.


since 17 april 2009, pirate party has more doubled in size, having on 50,000 members of 1 august 2009, , third largest political party in sweden member count. pirate party s youth organisation, young pirate, has more 21,800 members, making largest political youth organisation in sweden.


on 30 april 2009, newspaper election poll reported pirate party vote 5.1% upcoming european parliament election. more recent poll conducted polling organization demoskop newspaper upsala nya tidning gave party 7.9%. party received 7.1% of vote in 7th june election, , won seat in european parliament.
