subprime mortgage reporting

columbia journalism review has called hudson reporter “beat world on subprime abuses” , credited him being ahead of rest of media in exposing fraudulent lending practices driving causes of mortgage crisis. businessjournalism.org has called him guru of things predatory lending. hudson began investigating subprime mortgage industry in 1990s.


in february 2005, hudson , los angeles times staff writer scott reckard broke story “boiler room” sales tactics @ ameriquest mortgage, flagship company of nation’s largest subprime lending operation , sponsor of 2005 super bowl half-time show. columbia journalism review called “boiler room” story , follow-up piece “[t]wo of revealing stories on culture overtook lending industry.” in january 2006, ameriquest agreed pay $325 million predatory lending settlement in 49 states , district of columbia.


in june 2008, ireland’s sunday business post cited hudson’s 1996 book, merchants of misery, “describ[ing], in great detail, how mortgage-backed securities invented in 1980s making large pool of money available shady lenders making predatory loans poor customers @ high rates.”
