the apse under half-conical slate roof
a columned porch , passage leads out towards street. above porch free-standing tower reminiscent of italian campanile, architectural feature street admired ( there no features of italian buildings universally remembered pleasure ). tower topped spire bulk emphasised being corbeled out, giving structure top-heavy look. spire of unconventional design, starting pyramid before splitting central spike flanked 4 spirelets. street had seen similar examples @ tournai in belgium , @ genoa in italy; seems based of st james less on latter examples, described in lecture delivered while working on church.
the overall effect quite unlike of traditional english church tower, followed john ruskin s prescription height of tower made apparent, must ... detached campanile , there must 1 bounding line base coping. street later wrote breadth of effect point northern architects careless succeed , which, implication, sought deliver in churches. tower @ st james less pronounced example of free-styling campanile, though built similar examples of solid, massive, freestanding towers @ number of other churches in england , rome.

the church s interior has broad aspect 3 wide bays leading apse. walls dominated red brick, contrasted black brick, mastic , red , yellow glazed tiles link floor lower walls. nave lined short granite columns, each carved capitals w. pearce, support arcades of notched , moulded bricks. capitals illustrated carvings of parables , miracles. @ clerestory end three-light windows in first 2 bays , plate tracery in third. chancel separated nave prominent arch. unlike nave, groined in brick , extensively decorated mosaic , inlaid marble. design of sanctuary makes distinctively darker , more elaborately mysterious area of church.
many of church s interior features inspired architecture of churches in france, italy , germany. columns , capitals reflect of chapter house , cloister of st-georges de boscherville near rouen, while vaulting reinterpretation of in church of st jacques, compiègne. st-pierre in paris s montmartre district provided further inspiration.
the fittings of st james less original , part of street s vision church. heavily carved pulpit contributed thomas farmer, though battered. george frederic watts provided fresco of last judgement above chancel arch in 1861, replaced in 1880s mosaic made same design, after original fresco had deteriorated. church s stained glass designed clayton , bell , depicts various saints, including patron st james less. font capped unusual domed iron canopy displayed @ 1862 international exhibition.
