orlando born in bari, italy, emigrating united states in 1929. began drawing @ age, going art classes @ neighborhood boys club when 7 years old. continued there until 14, winning prizes annually in competitions, including john wanamaker bronze medal. in 1941, began attending school of industrial art (later high school of art , design), studied illustration. school breeding ground number of comics artists, including richard bassford, frank giacoia, carmine infantino, rocke mastroserio, alex toth , future comics letterer gaspar saladino. infantino , orlando remained close friends decades. while orlando still student, drew first published illustrations, scenes of mark twain s prince , pauper high-school textbook.


after high school graduation, orlando entered u.s. army , assigned military police, doing stockade guard duty, followed 18 months in europe. le havre, france, sent antwerp, belgium , germany, stenciled boxcars , guarded strategic supplies occupation forces.


after 1947 discharge, returned new york , began study @ art students league on gi bill. entered comic book field in 1949 when packager lloyd jacquet assigned him draw catholic-oriented treasure chest. chuck white story paid 9 dollars page. @ jacquet studio met fellow artist tex blaisdell, , 2 teamed later on many projects.
