after brushing north carolina, hurricane earl brought moderate rains , gusty winds parts of virginia. although center of storm remained more 100 mi (160 km) offshore, wind gusts reached 45 mph (72 km/h) in state. along coast, large swells produced storm resulted in beach erosion; however, no damage reported. throughout delaware, threat of hurricane earl lessened labor day weekend tourism. many hotels across state reached occupancies of 40-60%, lower expected. along coast, swells 6.02 ft (1.83 m) resulted in minor tidal flooding, though no damage took place. off coast of new jersey 2 people killed after being swept out sea rip currents. bodies of both victims found after washed onshore days after earl s passage. outer bands of earl brought gusty winds , minimal rainfall, peaking @ 0.22 in (5.6 mm) in chatsworth. beach erosion reported along coastline, worst being in atlantic city. @ city s garden pier, historical museum , atlantic city arts center shut down indefinitely after electrical lines , pipes damaged waves. after 2 weeks of beaches being shut down, swimmers allowed enter water on september 5 throughout new jersey.


in long island, new york, heavy surf produced earl inundated of jones beach state park, leading officials closing area several days. september 6, flood waters brought onshore storm still remained in area despite continuous efforts drain water. moderate beach erosion took place in robert moses state park. similar impacts felt in hamptons many roads temporarily shut down due flooding. rainfall storm peaked @ 2.11 in (54 mm) outside jamesport. following lack of damage caused storm, long island power authority criticized excessive spending on emergency crews. estimated $30 million spent bring in additional 1,600 crewmen deal possible power outages despite forecasts showing earl missing state. due excess funding, residents in new york faced increased rates power. additionally, new york senator charles fuschillo called audit of power authority. later determined lipa had jumped gun on situation , brought in assistance without necessity. in defense, agency claimed [was] better safe sorry , referring power outage following hurricane gloria in 1985 affected parts of long island on week.
