2008–12: formation , career beginnings

band members grace chatto, jack patterson, luke patterson , neil amin-smith met while studying undergraduates @ jesus college, university of cambridge. @ time, amin-smith, attended westminster school leading string quartet chatto, attended latymer school.

the band s name, clean bandit, comes translation of russian phrase; meaning similar english phrase complete bastard , though patterson later stated more affectionate term similar utter rascal .

2012–15: new eyes

in december 2012, group released debut single a+e , peaked @ number 100 on uk singles chart. lead single debut studio album new eyes, released on 2 june 2014 atlantic records uk. on 29 february 2012, released video online single uk shanty , featuring supermodel lily cole. on 29 march 2013, released album s second single mozart s house . song peaked @ number 17 on uk singles chart. album s third single dust clears charted @ number 43 on chart. album s fourth single rather featuring jess glynne released on 19 january 2014 , topped uk singles chart. fastest-selling song released in january since 1996 , ended 2014 year s second best-selling song in uk (after happy pharrell williams), selling on 1.13 million copies. rather reached number 1 in austria, finland, germany, netherlands, norway, sweden , number 2 in belgium, france, italy, new zealand , switzerland. charted on billboard hot 100, peaking @ number 10.

on 14 april 2014, band made tv debut on bbc s later... jools holland. in may 2014, announced 14 date headline tour of uk. in september 2014 performed bbc philharmonic orchestra @ mediacityuk. band collaborated again jess glynne, after hit song rather , on single real love . reached number 2 on uk singles chart.

in february 2015, rather won grammy award best dance recording @ 57th annual grammy awards. group recorded 30-piece orchestral version of rather @ abbey road studios marks & spencer s christmas 2015 advertising campaign. during course of rest of 2015, group have been on sorts of tours around world promote post-release of new eyes , carried on through months of 2016.

at 2015 coachella festival, group performed song disconnect , featuring vocals marina , diamonds. on 27 may 2016, released first single since march 2015, entitled tears , , features vocals x factor 2015 winner louisa johnson. song peaked @ number 5 in singles chart week after performed on britain s got talent.

on 19 october 2016, announcement on facebook page stated violinist , pianist neil amin-smith had decided leave group. neil made separate announcement effect on twitter account. 2 days later, group released first song without amin-smith: rockabye , features rapper sean paul , singer anne-marie. rockabye became second number-one hit in uk, , remained @ number 1 9 weeks, , went on become christmas number 1 single 2016. song became international chart topper band, becoming number 1 in uk, republic of ireland, australia, new zealand, austria, denmark, finland, germany, italy, netherlands, sweden , switzerland , top 5 hit in canada, france, norway. has charted @ number 9 on billboard hot 100 in us.

on 17 march 2017, trio released symphony , collaboration swedish singer zara larsson. song topped uk singles chart 1 week in april of year, becoming group s third number-one single in country. gave first live performance of song on voice uk on 18 march 2017. on 23 june band released studio version of disconnect featuring marina , diamonds.

in october 2017, band announced next single, succeeding disconnect , entitled miss , featuring renowned songwriter julia michaels.
