on june 23, 2010, nhl announced salary cap increased $2.6 million. result, new salary cap ceiling set @ $59.4 million, while salary cap floor $43.4 million.
u.s. media rights
in april 2011, nhl reached new television deal nbcuniversal, acquired comcast (owner of nhl s current cable partner versus) earlier in year. 10-year, us$2 billion deal extended , unified broadcast , cable television rights league, held nbc , versus respectively. notable changes under new deal included increase in nationally televised games on versus (which renamed under nbc name), new thanksgiving friday game on nbc, holding exclusive rights playoff games beginning second round (as opposed conference championships), , plans broadcast playoff games (subject blackouts during first round) nationally on nbcuniversal channels.
entry draft
the 2010 nhl entry draft took place on june 25–26, 2010, @ staples center in los angeles, home arena of los angeles kings. taylor hall selected first overall in draft edmonton oilers, tyler seguin picked second boston bruins , erik gudbranson chosen third florida panthers.
franchise sales
tom golisano, larry quinn , daniel dipofi, owners of buffalo sabres, sold franchise terrence pegula during course of 2010–11 season. league approved sale february 18, 2011.
rule changes
tie-breaking procedure
prior 2010–11 season, first tie-breaker separate teams equal number of points in conference number of games won, no matter how wins obtained. 2010–11 season, league made modification rule. new rule states team greater number of games won, excluding wins obtained in shootout, ranked higher. change made reward in-play team victories (regulation or overtime) instead of win obtained via individual skill contest. figure tracked in additional column in official league standings called row (regulation , overtime wins). in first year, tie-breaker prove critical, giving 106-point, 47-win (44-row) philadelphia flyers atlantic division title on 106-point, 49-win (39-row) pittsburgh penguins, seeded fourth rather second based on new rule.
illegal hits head
prior 2010–11 season, board of governors, general managers , competition committee unanimously agreed implement new penalty. illegal hit head lateral or blind side hit opponent head targeted and/or principal point of contact not permitted. player incurs total of 2 game misconducts under rule shall suspended automatically next game team plays. each subsequent game misconduct penalty, automatic suspension shall increased 1 game. commissioner of league can increase suspension longer due discretion.
