john barbour may have been born around 1320 if record of age in 1375 55 correct. birthplace not known, though aberdeenshire , galloway have made rival claims.


barbour s first appearance in historical record comes in 1356 promotion archdeaconry of aberdeen post had held less year in dunkeld cathedral. inferred present in avignon in 1355. in 1357, when david ii returned scotland exile , restored active kingship, barbour received letter of safe-conduct travel through england university of oxford. subsequently appears have left country in other years coincidental periods when david ii active king.


after death of david ii in 1371, barbour served in royal court of robert ii in number of capacities. during time composed, brus, receiving in 1377 gift of ten pounds scots, , in 1378 life-pension of twenty shillings. held various posts in king s household. in 1372 1 of auditors of exchequer , in 1373 clerk of audit.


the biographical evidence closing years signature witness sindry deeds in register of aberdeen in 1392. according obit-book of st machar s cathedral, aberdeen died on 13 march 1395 , state records show life-pension not paid after date. barbour made provision mass sung himself , parents, instruction observed in kirk of st machar until reformation.
