the second group of boats suffered electrical problems. o-11 sent philadelphia navy yard five-month overhaul. in october 1918, o-13 sank patrol boat mary alice in collision while (o-13) submerged. o-15 underwent refit sent reserve after before went service @ coco solo in panama canal zone. involved overhaul. o-16 underwent refit after commissioning , later suffered fire in conning tower in december 1919. of group 2 boats decommissioned in july 1924 , scrapped in july 1930 under terms of london naval treaty. however, o-12 disarmed, renamed nautilus, , used in arctic expedition sir hubert wilkins. after being returned navy, scuttled in norwegian fjord in november 1931.


the first group served although o-5 rammed cargo ship , sunk near panama canal on 28 october 1923 loss of 3 crew members. of surviving group 1 boats decommissioned in 1931, recommissioned in 1941 serve training boats based @ naval submarine base new london, connecticut. these boats taken out of service following world war ii except o-9 sank in deep submergence trials in june 1941. thirty-three of crew lost.


at point between wars o class modified improved safety in event of sinking. 2 marker buoys added fore , aft. in event submarine stranded on bottom buoys released show submarine s position. motor room hatch added, motor room being aftermost compartment. tapered after casing became step result of these modifications.
