in 1905 cheng joined sun yat-sen s tongmenghui secret revolutionary society, committed overthrow qing dynasty , modernize china. after serving cadet 1 year in artillery battalion in himeji, admitted artillery school of 6th class of imperial japanese army in 1907. 1 of classmates tang jiyao.


after graduation in 1908, cheng returned in china, put in charge of training new army in sichuan province under zhu qinglan. after outbreak of xinhai revolution, cheng took part in wuchang uprising , after participated in battle of changsha.


with establishment of republic of china, cheng appointed military commander of hunan. however, yuan shikai staged coup control republic, cheng tried revolt, failure prompted him flee japan, joined kuomintang , entered waseda university.


shortly after, yuan shikai tried proclaim himself emperor, causing national protection war. cheng returned hunan enlist rebel soldiers in cai e s army. during constitutional protection movement first appointed military commander of changsha, vice minister of war in sun yat-sen s guangzhou government. put in charge of training troops in guangzhou, , took part in northern expedition. 1925 1927 general commanding 6th army, , briefly served chairman of government of hunan province in 1928. in 1926 elected member of central executive committee of kuomintang.
