the official , accepted account of how city came known fennville, white settler name of elam atwater fenn built saw mill in immediate vicinity of current community. led people referring settlement fenn s mill became name associated post office there. documents pluralized mill render fenn s mills. first road through fennville built harrison hutchins , james mccormick in 1837.


a fire (possibly related great chicago fire or great michigan fire) destroyed village in october 1871. time, paperwork (timetables , such) completed chicago , michigan lake shore railroad arrived identified community s station fennville. thought @ time (including hutchins) have been result of clerical error. however, fenn himself recorded change in name had been suggested , mutually agreed upon among leaders of community in conjunction establishment of new railroad station. post office name changed fennville match station s name. community officially incorporated village of fennville on february 20, 1889.
