very little done modify fort during period apart reforming gun positions take new armament. fort used viewing platform fleet reviews illustrated in editions of illustrated london news 1856 , 1858. in 1875, experiments carried out @ stokes bay wilde s electric light. light placed on south-west bastion of fort. more experiments continued lime light , signalling lamps shore-to-ship communication in july 1875.


the fort incorporated defences of stokes bay adjunct stokes bay lines; royal engineers moved fort in 1878 train in use of naval mines , later search lights.


in 1879, torpedo experiments carried out @ stokes bay , part of consisted of mock attack on fort monckton. sham attack recorded in illustrated london news. fort ideal viewing platform observers , members of public. in 1880, demonstration of naval warfare took place in vicinity of fort. in 1880, 4th company of submarine miners of royal engineers occupied fort. moved out in 1884 fort blockhouse, leaving fort monckton accommodation r.e. militia during annual training.
