introduction

the story begins horace holyoke remembering oldtown had known when young. describes town , father s life teacher @ local academy met horace s mother, susy badger, prettiest student. life , parenthood hard on couple. mother’s beauty faded , father’s health weakened attempts provide family while trying continue studies. father died of consumption when horace ten , brother bill twelve.

horace , mother going live grandparents continue studies. brother went work on farm uncle jacob badger. deacon badger, horace s grandfather farmer , miller in oldtown , important figure in community. horace finds comfort grandparents , sam lawson, town bum, handyman, , gossip. badgers kitchen type of meeting place people in town. while there, horace hears stories of town , intellectual discussions on religion , philosophy. causes hunger knowledge grow more.
