clemson launched 5 september 1918 newport news shipbuilding & dry dock company, newport news, virginia; sponsored miss m. c. daniels. ship commissioned on 29 december 1919 lieutenant commander g. c. dichman in command. clemson cruised in east coast , cuban waters until placed in reserve 50% complement @ norfolk navy yard 13 june 1920. lay there , later @ charleston, south carolina , boston navy yards until sailed philadelphia navy yard, decommissioned 30 june 1922.

reclassified avp-17, 15 november 1939, , converted small aircraft tender, clemson recommissioned 12 july 1940. on 6 august, again reclassified, becoming avd-4, , on 18 august reported commander, aircraft, scouting force, atlantic fleet @ norfolk, virginia. 29 august 1940 28 november 1941 tended patrol planes in caribbean , @ galapagos islands. clemson sailed south arriving @ recife, brazil, 6 december. remained on coast of brazil until 22 january 1942 when returned galapagos islands. next year tender shuttled between there , caribbean services required. returned norfolk, 2 march 1943 , moved charleston, reconversion destroyer (although not reclassified dd-186 until 1 december 1943).

on 30 may 1943, joined pioneer american hunter-killer group built around bogue. clemson made 8 patrols group during sank 8 german submarines, major contribution victory in battle of atlantic. clemson shared in credit sinking of u-172 on 13 december @ 26° 19 n., 29° 58 w. after overhaul @ new york in 1944, escorted convoy casablanca , between 25 january , 9 march. once more, clemson underwent conversion, time high speed transport @ charleston navy yard (reclassified apd-31, 7 march 1944).

in pacific
clearing charleston on 1 may 1944, transport reached pearl harbor on 24 may , embarked underwater demolition team 6 (udt 6). sailed westward act mother ship udt 6 prepared beaches before invasions of saipan, guam, peleliu, leyte , of luzon. while entering lingayen gulf 5 january 1945, drove off japanese air attack. clemson escorted convoys ulithi, saipan, , okinawa before returning san pedro, california, 6 july. re-designated dd-186, 17 july, still undergoing reconversion when world war ii ended. decommissioned 12 october 1945 , sold 21 november 1946. ship s bell privately owned in clemson, south carolina.
