the sampo pivotal element of plot of finnish epic poem kalevala, compiled in 1835 (and expanded in 1849) elias lönnrot based on earlier finnish oral tradition.


in expanded second version of poem, sampo forged ilmarinen, legendary smith, task set mistress of pohjola in return daughter s hand.



ilmarinen, worthy brother,
thou skilful blacksmith,
go , see wondrous beauty,
see gold , silver garments,
see robed in finest raiment,
see sitting on rainbow,
walking on clouds of purple.
forge magic sampo,
forge lid in many colors,

grinds third 1 store-house.

later, louhi sorceress steals sampo, provoking ilmarinen , väinämöinen enter stronghold in secret , retrieve it. louhi, in reply, pursues them , combats väinämöinen. in struggle, louhi vanquished sampo destroyed.
