on 14 may 2016 meteorology department issued severe weather advisory twelve hours commencing 11:30 ist. 100mm of rain expected in parts of eastern , southern sri lanka wind speeds 70-80 kmh @ sea.


15 may

a depression off south-east sri lanka caused torrential rain , minor floods. 100mm of rainfall reported in avissawella, hambantota , kurunegala , several parts of capital colombo flooded. seas off mannar , trincomalee expected rough. national building research organization (nbro) issued landslide , cut slope failure warnings badulla, bandarawela, ella, haliela, hadummulla, haputale, lunugala, passara, uva-paranagama , welimada areas.


more 35 families in nalluruwa displaced after gale hit homes. bad weather forced 2 flights bound bandaranaike international airport (bia) diverted cochin international airport. landslide in hattota near dehiowita in kegalle district left 4 dead , 1 missing.


between 8.30 5.30pm 137.7mm of rain recorded in katunayake, 125.7mm in trincomalee, 117.2mm in kurunegala, 106.9mm in colombo, 98mm in mahailuppallama, 93.5mm in ratnapura, 79. mm in kandy , 74.7 mm in batticaloa.


16 may

a flight bound bia diverted mattala rajapaksa international airport due bad weather. water levels on attanagalu oya, kalu ganga, kelani river, maha oya, mahaweli river, nilwala ganga , yan oya rising, disaster management center (dmc) warned people living on river banks , low-lying areas in badalgama, dunamale, giriulla, hanwella, horowpatana, nawalapitiya, panadugama, peradeniya, , ratnapura vigilant. meteorology department advised low pressure area moving away sri lanka , rainfall subside though heavy winds , showers continue few days. power failures reported in several villages. flights leaving ratmalana airport grounded due heavy rain. southern expressway s exit @ biyagama closed due flooding.


heavy rains , floods affected chilaw, colombo, galle, kalutara, kandy, kegalle, matara, nuwara eliya , ratnapura , 1 person killed lightning in anuradhapura. sri lanka air force (slaf) rescued fishermen off pitipana near negombo in gampaha district after boat capsized.

17 may

a landslide in ilukkwatta near kadugannawa in kandy district buried 2 homes under 25 feet of mud, rock , rubble, killing seven. road development authority waived tolls on southern expressway between kottawa kadawatha due weather. schools in central province, north western province, sabaragamuwa province , western province closed due floods.


over 200 people trapped flooding in thabbowa in puttalam district rescued slaf , sri lanka navy. landslide in samsarakanda near aranayaka in kegalle district buried several homes, killing 21 , leaving 123 missing. villages of elangapitiya, pallebage , siripura buried in landslide. landslide @ kalupahana estate near bulathkohupitiya in kegalle district buried several homes, killing 14 , leaving 2 missing.


according dmc death toll stood @ 8 8 missing , more 200,000 people affected.


18 may

the sri lanka army, of villagers, volunteers , medical staff, began rescue efforts @ aranayaka , bulathkohupitiya. 2 boys killed in wattala due floods. outer circular expressway flooded @ kaduwela. roads underwater , impassable, wilpattu national park closed until 25 may 2016.


as water levels on kelani river rose rapidly, dmc warned living near banks move safety. ceylon electricity board imposed emergency power cuts on colombo suburbs of kohilawatte, kolonnawa, kotikawatte, orugodawatta, sedawatta, sinhapura , wellampitiya precautionary measure. overnight army , navy evacuated 26,000 people affected floods in colombo.


according meteorology department last 4 days had seen 1 of highest rainfalls in sri lanka. 373.3mm of rain fell on kilinochchi in 24 hours 8.30 a.m. on 16 may 2016. pottuvil recorded highest rainfall on 15 may 2016 (145.8mm) whilst highest rainfall on 17 may 2016 (267.8mm) in mahailukpallama. 135mm of rain fell on kalepitimulla in 24 hours 8.30 a.m. on 18 may 2016.
