after completing studies, vajiralongkorn served career officer in royal thai army. served staff officer in directorate of army intelligence , attended command , general staff college in 1977. vajiralongkorn trained periods us, british, , australian armed services, studying unconventional warfare , advanced navigation. qualified fixed-wing , helicopter pilot. in 1978 became head of king s own bodyguard battalion. later year interrupted military career ordained season buddhist monk, customary thai buddhist men.
