born rosamunde e. m. l. scott on 22 september 1924 in lelant, cornwall, daughter of helen , charles scott, british commander. before birth father posted in burma, mother remained in england. attended school of st. clare in penzance , howell s school llandaff before going on miss kerr-sanders secretarial college. began writing when seven, , published first short story when 15.the world of rosamunde pilcher


from 1943 through 1946, pilcher served women s royal naval service. on 7 december 1946, married graham hope pilcher, war hero , jute industry executive died in march 2009. moved dundee, scotland, still lives today. had 2 daughters , 2 sons, , fourteen grandchildren. son, robin pilcher, novelist.


writing career

in 1949, pilcher s first book, romance novel, published mills , boon, under pseudonym jane fraser. published further ten novels under name. in 1955, began writing under real name secret tell. 1965 had dropped pseudonym , signing own name of novels.


at beginning writing refuge daily life. claims writing saved marriage. real breakthrough in pilcher s career came in 1987, when wrote family saga, shell seekers. since books have made 1 of more successful contemporary female authors.


one of famous works, shell seekers, focuses on penelope stern keeling, elderly british woman relives life in flashbacks, , on relationship adult children. keeling s life not extraordinary, spans time of huge importance , change in world. novel describes everyday details of life during world war ii of lived in britain. shell seekers sold more 5 million copies worldwide , adapted stage terence brady , charlotte bingham.


in 1996, novel coming home won romantic novel of year award romantic novelists association.


pilcher retired writing in 2000. 2 years later created officer of order of british empire (obe).


tv adaptation
