birmingham city council largest local authority in europe 120 councillors representing 40 wards. headquarters @ council house in victoria square. of 2017, council has labour party majority , led john clancy, replacing previous conservative/liberal democrat coalition @ may 2012 elections, until clancy s resignation on 11 septemebr 2017. honour , dignity of lord mayoralty conferred on birmingham letters patent on 3 june 1896.


birmingham s ten parliamentary constituencies represented in house of commons of 2017 1 conservative , 9 labour mps. in european parliament city forms part of west midlands european parliament constituency, elects 6 members of european parliament.


birmingham part of warwickshire, expanded in late 19th , 20th centuries, absorbing parts of worcestershire south , staffordshire north , west. city absorbed sutton coldfield in 1974 , became metropolitan borough in new west midlands county. until 1986, west midlands county council based in birmingham city centre.


since 2011, birmingham has formed part of greater birmingham & solihull local enterprise partnership along neighbouring authorities bromsgrove, cannock chase, east staffordshire, lichfield, redditch, solihull, tamworth, wyre forest.


a top-level government body, west midlands combined authority, formed in april 2016. wmca holds devolved powers in transport, development planning, , economic growth. authority governed directly-elected mayor, similar mayor of london.
